The MyGMMS plugin I mentioned on the previous post only allows one map per post, but as you can see I inserted two. I rule! :-D

Llevo una temporada usando Google Reader como lector de RSS. La verdad es que resulta bastante cómodo y fácil de usar, y además al ser una aplicación web puedes acceder desde casa, desde el trabajo, etc. y se va guardando los artículos que lees estés donde estés.
Una opción muy interesante que tiene es la de compartir las noticias que consideres interesantes, con las que te genera una página y un feed RSS. Acabo de añadir éste feed con un widget a la barra de la derecha, bajo el título de “Noticias”. Así irán apareciendo por aquí enlaces a noticias que me parecen curiosas/interesantes/divertidas, independientemente de que me dé por comentarlas en más detalle en algún artículo.
A co-worker and I have made a Spanish translation of the Sandbox theme for WordPress, following these instructions: Playing with Gettext in the Sandbox.

In order to use it, just copy these files into wp-content/themes/sandbox.
After some time stabilized on the 0.9.5 release and with the design competition finished, the great Sandbox theme for WordPress has been updated twice already in a matter of days.
For those who, like me, have modified the code and need to maintain those modifications, I’ve made patches to ease the upgrade from one Sandbox release to the next one. This way we don’t need to port our the modifications from one version to another, just apply the patch. The changelog between releases can be found on this forum thread.
In order to apply the patch, you’ll need the “patch” program (on Windows install Cygwin; on MacOS X, fink):

I’ve just migrated the blog theme from Sandbox 0.6.1 to 0.9.5. The skin management has been completely overhauled in this version. The XHTML structure has and some classes have been slightly modified, so you’ll need to tweak your current CSS skins. And the skin management option on the admin dashboard is gone, but you can easily bring it back installing the skinner plugin.
In order for the skinner plugin to work, you’ll need to follow the instructions on its page. Namely, you’ll have to create a “skins” folder into the sandbox dir, and then a subfolder for each individual skin, like “sandbox/skins/sandbox-k2″. On that dir you’ll have to put the style.css file for the skin.
This is the CSS style I’m using currently on this blog, based on the original sandbox-k2: sandbox-k2 for Sandbox 0.9.x.
WordPress MU 1.2.3 has just been released. It’s available for download here.
This update is highly recommended specially if you’re running a multi-site install, as it includes my patch (trac) to fix the problem with static pages on secondary domains.

“Si no está en Google, no existe”. Esta frase tan categórica es cierta tanto para comercios on-line o webs corporativas, como para nuestro blog personal. Cuando necesitamos localizar información en Internet, vamos a Google. Y quien dice Google, dice Yahoo, MSN, o cualquier otro buscador. Tenemos que estar ahí.
Éstos buscadores usan “bots” o “spiders” para indexar el contenido de nuestras páginas, programas que periódicamente recorren todos los sitios que ya conocen en busca de actualizaciones y nuevos enlaces a través de los cuales descubrir, procesar e indexar más y más páginas
A nadie se le escapa que el trabajo de éstos programas es beneficioso, pero normalmente no tenemos en cuenta que generan tráfico extra a nuestra web. Aunque parezca mentira, conozco sitios en los que el tráfico de GoogleBot y compañía (ojo, hablo del propio bot, no de visitas dirigidas desde el buscador) consumía hasta un tercio del ancho de banda total de los accesos. Estamos hablando de GIGAS de tráfico al día.
Además los buscadores penalizan la información repetida: si tenemos varias páginas con contenido igual o muy similar, o aún peor, si podemos cargar una misma página con varias URLs distintas, podemos llevarnos sorpresas desagradables como páginas que no aparecen en los resultados de una búsqueda en favor de un feed o un resumen (índice de sección, categoría, etc.) con contenido similar, o páginas con un pagerank bajo porque éste se “diluye” entre varias URLs.
Por ello es importante aprender cómo funcionan éstos bots para saber cómo optimizar su paso por nuestro sitio web, cómo “llevarlos de la mano” hasta la información que queremos priorizar para así mejorar nuestro posicionamiento en los resultados, minimizando a su vez cuando sea posible la cantidad de información transmitida para no saturar nuestra conexión y servidores.

One of the worst parts of WordPress (to say something) si comment management when using comment moderation: you have to go to the admin page to approve/reject comments, and then “jump” to the real blog to reply to it. Continuously, back and forth. A PITA.
Via Lorelle on WordPress I’ve found the Better Comments Manager plugin. It adds a new pane to the “Comments” menu that allows you to view all the commens, (dis)approve them, AND reply to them, everything without leaving the admin panel. Works great and it’s very comfortable. And has no problems with WordPress MU.
I think I’ve (finally!) fixed a bug in WordPress MU that has been driving me crazy for the past few weeks: on multi-site installs (multiple domains, not just sub-domains) posts did show correctly but pages didn’t at all (404 page). To get them to work you had to create a fake page on the primary domain with the same name as those not working on the other domains.
