You can download X-MAME source code from the Official X-MAME homepage. If you want to use the joystick, you'll need the "Linux Joystick Driver" wich you can find in it's home page. Anyway, joystick support is included in the 2.2.x kernel series. To have sound, you'll need to have support for your sound card compiled into the kernel. You can download the last kernel version from Kernel.ORG or one of it's mirrors, or from Linux HQ. Sound also works with the ALSA sound drivers. WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?The two main characteristics of MAME, the fact that it's written in C and it emulates many CPUs, make it quite easy to port to many different platforms and support a lot of arcade machines (more than 1900! romsets supported by the last release), but also make it SLOW.Lots of people have tried to make it faster, by doing things like change the
CPU cores (Z80, 68K, 8086...) written in C by others written in assembler
and/or use a C compiler wich optimizes the code for an specific processor,
like Rodimus Prime's PentiuMAME. And you REALLY GET a considerable speed-up.
